Aims of the course:

  • To increase knowledge of the normal eating, drinking and swallowing process

  • To recognise signs and symptoms of impaired eating, drinking and swallowing

  • To develop an understanding of management strategies that support the individual to maintain a safe swallow

  • To develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary team’s role in the assessment and management of eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties

  • To understand adaptations made to diet, including the thickening of fluids

  • To understand ramifications of dysphagia on medication intake

  • To increase awareness and confidence when supporting another person to eat and drink

  • To develop safe practices which positively impact on the health of others

Duration

  • This is a full one day course (6.5 hrs)

  • Both theoretical and practical refresher workshops are also available.

  • Bespoke workshops can be developed and facilitated to meet a specific individual's needs on request, e.g. thickening drinks

Participants

  • The course can be facilitated for 6 - 16 participants

  • Please be aware that the course includes practical tasting and supporting others to eat and drink; if a participant has any specific food allergy, or phobia, please contact the Speech and Language Therapist to discuss prior to attending.

 

Venue

  • tba with you.  An ideal space will include access to a kitchen with a fridge
